a) to mean ‘and’ as a joining particle.
I want a book and a pen. |
أُرِيْدُ كِتَابًا وَقَلَمًا |
My father and my mother is in their room |
أَبِي وَ أَمِّي فِي غُرْفَتِهِمَا |
Arabic is the language of Quran and this is also the language of Jannah. |
الْعَرَبِيَّةُ لُغَةُ الْقُرْآنِ وَ هِيَ لُغَةُ الْجَنَّةِ أَيْضًا |
b) وَ is used as a particle of the oath in the beginning of sentence. وَ is harf jaar, so the ism after it would be majrur. To emphasize more لَقَد comes after وَ in an assertive sentence, but in a negative sentence, it doesn't come.
وَاللهِ مَا رَأيْتُهُ فِي السُّوْقِ |
وَاللهِ لَقَدْ رَأيْتُهُ فِي السُّوْقِ |
By Allah, I did not see him in the market. |
By Allah, I have seen him in the market |
وَاللهِ مَا اكَلتُ شَيْئًا |
وَاللهِ لَقَدْ كِدْتُ أَمُوْتُ |
By Allah, I did not eat anything. |
By Allah, I was almost dying. |

My father died when I was small |
مَاتَ اَبِيْ وَاَنَا صَغِيْرٌ |
The boy came to me crying. |
جَاءَنِي الْوَلَدُ وَهُوَ يَبْكِيْ |
Fighting has been decreed upon you though you dislike it. |
كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِتَالُ وَهُوَ كُرْهٌ لَّكُمْ |
I entered the mosque when the Imam was bowing. |
دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ وَالْاِمَامُ يَرْكَعُ |
I entered the mosque when the Imam has finished fatiha. |
دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ وَ قَدْ قَرَأَ الْاِمَامُ الفَاتِحَةَ |
We left the class after the teacher explains the lesson. |
خَرَجْنَا مِنَ الفَصْلِ وَ قَدْ شَرَحَ الْمُدَرِّسُ الدَّرْسَ |
The doctor came after the patient had died. |
جَاءَ الطَّبِيْبُ وَ قَدْ مَاتَ الْمَرِيْضُ |
He said, o my master, how could I have a son when I have reached my old age. |
قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَامٌ وَقَدْ بَلَغَنِيَ الْكِبَرُ |
Points to be noted

After و al hal in a nominal sentence though the present form of the verb is used, however, the meaning would be in past tense.

After و al hal in verbal sentence, قَدْ comes before the assertive past tense.
