In the case of narrative sentence أَوْ is used for the meaning of ‘or’, whereas in case of interrogative sentence أَمْ is used. Example-
Bilal or Hamid came out. |
خَرَجَ بِلَالٌ أَوْ حَامِدٌ |
I saw Bilal or Hamid |
رَأَيْتُ بِلَالًا أَوْ حَامِدًا |
The car belongs to Bilal or Hamid. |
السَّيَارَةُ لِبِلَالٍ أَوْ لِحَامِدٍ |
Are you from India or Pakistan? |
أَ أَنْتَ مِنَ الهِنْدِ أَمْ مِنْ بَاكِسْتَانَ |
Are you engineer or doctor? |
أَ مُهَنْدِسٌ أَنْتَ أَمْ طَبِيْبٌ؟ |
Example from Quran-
So whoever amongst you is sick or travelling. |
فَمَن كَانَ مِنْكُمْ مَّرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ |
When they will see it they will think that they have stayed in the earth only for one evening or one morning. |
كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَاهَا |
Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, for then, they are free from blame; 23:6 |
إِلَّا عَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ |
They will also say if we would have heard or use our intellect we would not be among the people of hell fire. |
وَقَالُوا لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ |
Or did they create the heavens and the earth? 52:36 |
أَمْ خَلَقُوا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ |
Or are with them the treasures of your Lord? Or are they the tyrants with the authority to do as they like? 52:37 |
أَمْ عِندَهُمْ خَزَائِنُ رَبِّكَ أَمْ هُمُ الْمُصَيْطِرُونَ |
