طَفِقَ, جَعَلَ, أَخَذَ   etc. are used to mean ‘start’. The ism and Khabar  come after it. These are incomplete verb and the present/ future form of the verb is used in these.

Bilal started writing.

طَفِقَ بِلَالٌ يَكْتُبُ

Bilal started explaining the lesson.

أَخَذَ بِلَالٌ يَشْرَحُ الْدَّرْسَ

I started eating.

جَعَلْتُ آكُلُ

Then he started making a hole on their feet and throat.

فَطَفِقَ مَسْحًا بِالسُّوقِ وَالْأَعْنَاقِ
